Your energy bills are probably always going up. NO matter what you try to do the gas bill just keeps getting higher.

We've put together a list of free ways of saving money on your gas and electricity. The things at the top of the list save you most money - so do these first. Then work your way through the rest of the list!

Change energy companies - This might sound complicated, but it's really very easy. First find your last few energy bills. You need to know who you get your energy from, how much you use and how often you pay. Once you've got your information together then visit this great energy comparison site Uswitch's - Energy Price Comparison Calculator - is a free impartial service that could save you up to £325* just by helping to switch to a cheaper energy supplier, or on average up to £332** a year by transferring the balance on their credit card.

Turn the thermostat down. See if you can fix it in one place to stop others turning it up when they're cold.
Put the central heating on a timer. Set it so when the house is empty or you're all asleep it won't come on!
Use the timer. Turn the heating off intermittantly, so it is off for an hour or two and then back on for a while. If you get the balance right no one will notice the house is actually cooler than it used to be.
Insulate. Make sure your home is as insulated as possible. There are always grants available if you're on benefits and sometimes you can get them even if you're not on any benefits. You can look in the phone book for insulators or ask your energy supplier if they have any deals in your area. Sometimes the local council will be able to tell you of the grants available.
Simple draft proofing of letterboxes and round doors can help too and is very cheap. Ensure your hot water tank is wrapped up properly.
Double glazing can help cut heat loss through your windows. Triple glazing is better but more expensive. Ask your local trading standards if they have a "trade safe" list of suppliers.
The kitchen is a big user of energy. Look for more efficient ways of cooking. Use grill plates rather than put the oven on. Use slow cookers. Cook more than one meal when you have the oven on. Cool and freeze extras.
Keep the fridge and freezer stocked and at the right temperature. Defrost both if they need it. Don't let the kids hold the door open for longer than they need.
Use energy saving bulbs.
Go and check every light in your house.

Turn lights off when you don't need them on.
Train the kids to turn the lights off too.

Close the curtains and tuck them behind the radiators else you're only heating the window side.
Put on a jumper when you're cold!

Air your home during sunny warm weather. Open curtains to let the sun in.

Shut the front door! Draft seal round it and sort the letter box out!
