I read an amusing quote off an american site yesterday

"My sister buys $1000 worth of books every month. If only there was somewhere like the video hire shop but for book!"

Well this made me smile, but then wonder how many people do actually know about their local library, and do they have libraries in other countries.

Books at your local library - these are free to borrow. Opening times vary enormously but more areas have an evening session or two nowadays. You can also use the internet for free or a small charge depending on your local council. My nearest library also sells off old books which can be worth a look as they were 50p for a carrier bag!
Obviously very new books may be booked in advance - but ask at the counter for any help you need. I've always found the people who work in libraries are really nice!
They may even have DVDs for hire too.
Big plus for the library - they have heating on! So turn off your heating and go down to the library and sit and enjoy a good book there!
Charity Shop books
The prices at charity shops can vary enormously. One I know well has books 10 for £1, whereas other shops charge as much as £8 for a second hand book.
Second Hand Book shops
Tend to be more expensive than charity shops. May specialise.

Online bookshops offering discounts - lots of book shops give you free delivery when you order online and a big discount for preordering books.

My favourites are Waterstones - who have a free newsletter where you can enter competitions to win book, plus get the chance to review books from time to time and Play.com who offer free delivery as well as competition

Free ebooks and books online - check out book freebies for lists of places to get free books on the internet
Form a book swap club with your neighbours or friends or work colleagues.
Free delivery available on books online
A word of warning - don't download illegal copies of books. You are likely to get caught and fined.
Always renew books from the library on time! See if they can be renewed online or by phone to save you a journey.
Share magazines - if you buy a glossy mag and so does your friend then swap after a week so you get to read two for the price of one.

Start a book swap with friends or work mates. Everyone brings a book in and you all swap round. Works best when there's a group who like the same sort of books.

Offer to share a copy of a book with a friend or two.
